Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972, on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. Her aunt Denise was a great influence on her enthusiasm for the arts and her creative side. Her aunt worked the evening shift in the role of a nurse so that she could pursue her love for theater and art during the day. DuVernay was brought to the movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay saw how art was powerful in promoting political activism. DuVernay was educated by her mother who had a strong social conscience, and encouraged DuVernay to express herself through art. DuVernay had her summers spent in Lowndes County Alabama, where her father was born and was raised. Her father recalled watching the Civil Rights marches that were historic through the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in neighboring Selma Alabama. Her time in Selma inspired her later to direct a movie on Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as the Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay earned her high school diploma from Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. The school was home to University of California Los Angeles where she earned degrees in English as well as African American Studies. While she was still a student DuVernay began to consider producing in television journalism. As an intern, she worked for CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being given the responsibility of looking over the family home, and then looking through the rubbish of one members of the juries. The jury member was unhappy with her journalism tasks and decided to switch over to the business of public relations. DuVernay was brought on straight from college to be an assistant publicist in the studio that was small. She founded The DuVernay Agency, her company for public relations in 1999. Her company launched a range of networks for promotion and lifestyle which include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
