Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972, on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was encouraged to pursue her love of the arts by her aunt Denise in her early years. She worked as a night nurse so that she could give her aunt time that she required in the days to be able to enjoy art, literature and theatre. DuVernay was a fan of the movie West Side Story, which she showed her. DuVernay was taught by her mother that art could serve to engage people. DuVernay would make use of the summers she spent there to inspire her next film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a student at Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in the year 1990. She then attended an institution called the University of California Los Angeles which she graduated with qualifications in English as well as African American studies. While she was in school, DuVernay began to consider producing to broadcast journalism. DuVernay began as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned an assignment to watch the family home, and then looking through the garbage of one of jurors. Her tasks left her disappointed with journalism, and she decided to pursue a career in the public relations industry. DuVernay was brought on straight after graduating from college as an intern at one of the smaller studios. She started The DuVernay Agency, her PR firm, in 1999.
